Sunday, December 9, was Commitment Sunday. Pattie Hughes, a parishioner at St. Ignatius, spoke at Mass about her commitment to her Parish and to the Parish Campaign. You may read, in her own words, what she had to say here.

From the Pastor
In conjunction with our Archiocese-wide celebration of the Bicentennial, every parish of the Archdiocese has been asked to conduct a parish-based capital campaign. A portion of what we collect will benefit the neediest parishes of the Archdiocese. Such sharing of resources is especially relevant for us here at St. Ignatius: the construction of our first buildings depended on generous assistance from our sister parishes, Saint Francis Xavier and Saint John the Evangelist. The campaign will also include support for the 2007 Cardinal’s Appeal
The bulk of the funds generated will be used to address our own most pressing needs. For many years the parishioners of St. Ignatius have recognized their responsibility to maintain and to restore our landmark Church, the center of our Parish’s life. Restoration plans have been carefully developed; now is the time to ensure that our beloved St. Ignatius Church be restored to its pristine beauty and serve the spiritual needs of future generations.
High among the priorities of our Jesuit Parish has always been, and must remain, the passing on of our Faith to our children and young adults. Accordingly, we will set aside a portion of the funds we collect to assist in the renovation of our Parish Grammar School. The School’s annual operating expenses are covered by the families of our students, but the complete renovation of the facility requires and merits the support of the entire Parish Community, whose mission it carries forth.
Not all of the Parish’s children attend the Grammar School. Our Interparish Religious Education Program (IREP) serves all the children of the Parish, and of neighboring ones as well. The time has come for us to build on the invaluable work of the Grammar School and IREP by developing a first-class Youth Ministry Program. No such program exists in the whole of the East Manhattan Vicariate.
The journey of discipleship lasts a lifetime; we are never finished learning Christ and Christ’s ways. We need to continue to expand and develop our adult faith-formation programs, as well as our collaboration with local cultural and religious institutions. The more we reflect on the Gospel and on the needs of our Community, the more we recognize the need to develop new ministries, e.g. to the home-bound and hospitalized, to the bereaved, and to the new immigrants in our midst. Expanded funding is required for expanding ministries.
The St. Ignatius Loyola Parish Campaign will start in May and has an ambitious goal of $5 million. Out of consideration for our Parish Community, this year’s annual Spring and Fall Appeals will be incorporated into this Parish Campaign, so additional monetary commitments, with the exception of the Annual Appeal in support of our superb Music Program, will be requested only once in 2007.
Thank you for your continued generous support of the Jesuit Mission of St. Ignatius Loyola Parish.

From the Campaign Chairs
It is our privilege to be an integral part of the 2007 Parish Campaign. Our primary objective, as outlined in Father Blaszczak’s letter, is to address the needs of the St. Ignatius Community, as well as those of the Archdiocese. Our Parish has never had an appropriate reserve to cover much needed capital repairs and improvements—either of the Church or of our Grammar School. As of today, the combined endowment for all the ministries of Saint Ignatius Loyola (Church, School and outreach programs), is only about $3 million—approximately $800 per registered parishioner and just over $10 per individual who passed through our Church buildings last year.
The Parish’s budget is subject to the normal inflationary pressures that most of us experience—utility bills, heating costs, on-going maintenance due to normal wear-and-tear, etc. In addition, the growth of our Parish, along with the need for the services that you, our fellow Parishioners, look for and value, puts an added weight on our operating costs. This is the reason we rely upon your generosity during the traditional Spring and Fall Appeals. Although we are combining those Appeals with this Capital Campaign for the convenience of our donors, we obviously can only credit as a Capital Campaign contribution the excess over what you would normally give to those traditional Appeals and for the Cardinal’s Appeal.
In this bicentennial year for the Archdiocese, we hope that you will look upon this Campaign as a way of leaving a lasting legacy for those members of our Faith Community who will follow, in much the same way that our spiritual forebears over 150 years ago created the beautiful Church, School and ministries that we enjoy today.
