In 1946 the New York Jesuits Philip Carey and John M. "Pete" Corridan, launched a crusading apostolate for longshoremen in the Port of New York and New Jersey. Corridan’s tireless efforts helped inspire creation of the Waterfront Commission, among other controversial achievements. Corridan also inspired the classic 1954 film ‘On the Waterfront.’

Dr. James T. Fisher is Co-Director of the Curran Center for American Catholic Studies at Fordham. His next book The Irish Waterfront and the Soul of the Port: New York/New Jersey 1917-1954 will be published by Cornell University Press in early 2009.
