CHILDREN’S CHOIRS

For Children who will be in grades 1-8 in the Fall are invited to audition for the Children’s Choirs.  No preparation is nesessary for this informal audition. For information contact Mary Huff at 212.288.3588 x633.

In the Children’s Choirs, boys and girls in grades 1-8 rehearse weekly during the school year, participate monthly in Sunday liturgies, sing during the Family Mass of Christmas Eve, and present a Spring Concert in May with the Parish Community Choir. Informal auditions are held in the spring and by appointment during the year for children who desire to receive training in the art of singing, reading, and understanding music and music theory. Through their hard work and dedication, not only will the choristers develop a passionate commitment to excellence through the choral art, but they will learn self-discipline, confidence, and the importance of giving back to their community through the gift of music.

The St. Ignatius Children’s Choir rehearses on a weekday afternoon in Wallace Hall, schedule to be announced soon. This choir is for older children who have previous music experience and exhibit the maturity required for a longer, more demanding rehearsal. In May 2006, this choir made its first professional concert debut in the Sacred Music in a Sacred Space concert series in Mendelssohn’s Paulus, and are often featured performers in the St. Ignatius Christmas Concerts in December. Children in this choir are in grades six, seven, and eight.

Training Choir I rehearses on a weekday afternoon in Wallace Hall, schedule to be announced. This choir frequently sings with the St. Ignatius Children’s Choir on Sunday mornings. Children in this choir often have at least one year of experience singing in the Children’s Choir program and are in third, fourth, and fifth grade.

Training Choir II and Training Choir III also rehearse on a weekday afternoon and are for younger children with little or no previous musical experience. Children develop a healthy beginning vocal technique, gain familiarity with the liturgy, and focus on the fundamentals of music notation.

We welcome new members to our choir throughout the year. Please contact the director, Mary Huff, through the music office for more information or to set up an informal audition for your child.
