Join our Choirs
All children who are members of the parish are eligible for the St. Ignatius Children’s Choirs, regardless of where they attend school. Boys and girls in grades 1-8 rehearse weekly during the school year, participate monthly in Sunday liturgies, sing during the Christmas Eve Family Mass, and present a Spring Concert in May with the Parish Community Choir and Canticum Sacrum. Informal auditions are held in the spring, and by appointment during the year, for children who desire to receive training in the art of singing, reading, and understanding music and music theory. Through their hard work and dedication, not only will the choristers develop a passionate commitment to excellence through the choral art, but they will learn self-discipline, confidence, and the importance of giving back to their church and community through the gift of music.
The St. Ignatius Middle School Choir rehearses on Thursday afternoons in Wallace Hall, 4:15 – 5:45 PM. This choir is for older children who have previous music experience and exhibit the maturity required for a longer, more demanding rehearsal. In May 2006, this choir made its first professional concert debut in the Sacred Music in a Sacred Space concert series in Mendelssohn’s Paulus. In December 2007, the Children’s Choir performed in the opera Amahl and the Night Visitors with the title role sung by one of our own choristers! Highlights of the 2008-09 season included a performance of Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion, and our annual appearance on the St. Ignatius Christmas Concert program. Our upcoming season includes Handel’s Messiah with the St. Ignatius Choirs and Orchestra, as well as the Pueri Cantores Regional Children’s Choral Festival to be hosted here at St. Ignatius. Children in this choir are in grades five, six, seven, and eight.
Training Choir II rehearses on Wednesday afternoons in Wallace Hall. This choir frequently sings with the Training Choir I on Sunday mornings and with the Middle School Choir for Christmas Eve, Good Friday, on the Christmas and May Liturgical Concert programs. Children in this choir often have at least one year of experience singing in the Children’s Choir program and are in third and fourth grade.
Training Choir I rehearses on Wednesday afternoons and is for younger children with little or no previous musical experience. Children develop a healthy beginning vocal technique, gain familiarity with the liturgy, and focus on the fundamentals of musicianship, including music notation. They join Training Choir II for Sunday Masses and sing on the May Liturgical Concert program. Children in this choir are in grades one and two.
HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR
The High School Choir is open to youth in grades 9 – 12 who are members of the parish and the wider community. The choir rehearses on Sundays, 12:30-1:30 PM in Loyola Chapel and sings monthly at the Wallace Hall Mass at 11 AM. The High School Choir may sing with the Children’s Choirs and Parish Community Choir on Christmas Eve and Good Friday, and join the Middle School Choir for the Pueri Cantores choir festival in March and Spring Concert in May.
