Boys and girls in grades 1-8 rehearse weekly during the school year, participate monthly in Sunday liturgies, sing during the Christmas Eve Family Mass, and present a Spring Concert in May with the Parish Community Choir and Canticum Sacrum. Informal auditions are held in the spring, and by appointment during the year, for children who desire to receive training in the art of singing, reading, and understanding music and music theory. Through their hard work and dedication, not only will the choristers develop a passionate commitment to excellence through the choral art, but they will learn self-discipline, confidence, and the importance of giving back to their church and community through the gift of music.
The St. Ignatius Children’s Choir rehearses on Thursday afternoons in Wallace Hall, 4:15 – 5:45 PM. This choir is for older children who have previous music experience and exhibit the maturity required for a longer, more demanding rehearsal. In May 2006, this choir made its first professional concert debut in the Sacred Music in a Sacred Space concert series in Mendelssohn’s Paulus. In December 2007, the Children’s Choir performed in the opera Amahl and the Night Visitors with the title role sung by one of our own choristers! Highlights of the 2008-09 season included a Pueri Cantores choir festival with the choristers of St. Agnes Cathedral, Long Island; a performance of Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion, and our annual appearance on the Saint Ignatius Christmas Concert program. Children in this choir are in grades six, seven, and eight.
Training Choir I rehearses on Tuesday afternoons in Wallace Hall. This choir frequently sings with the Training Choir II on Sunday mornings and with the Children’s Choir for Christmas Eve, Good Friday and Confirmations. Children in this choir often have at least one year of experience singing in the Children’s Choir program and are in third, fourth, and fifth grade.
Training Choir II rehearses on Thursday afternoons and is for younger children with little or no previous musical experience. Children develop a healthy beginning vocal technique, gain familiarity with the liturgy, and focus on the fundamentals of music notation. Please contact the Music Department for more information or to set up an informal audition for your child.
HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR
The High School Choir is open to youth in grades 9 – 12 who are members of the parish and the wider community. The choir rehearses on Sundays, 5:45 – 6:45 PM in Wallace Hall and sings monthly at the Wallace Hall Mass at 11 AM. The High School Choir may sing with the Children’s Choir and Parish Community Choir on Christmas Eve and Good Friday and join the Children’s Choir for the Pueri Cantores choir festival in April and Spring Concert in May.
Please contact the Music Department to enroll in the High School Choir.
